Pecan Valley Golf Course is an 18-hole PGA Championship course and has meant a lot to our neighborhood.  By its very existence, it has enhanced our area.  It is an historic golf course; the adjacent housing area of Pecan Valley east of the Salado Creek was established almost immediately after the golf course was opened.

This golf course, not only is a great and well-known sports venue, but it is also a much needed and treasured open space.  It has historic significance, not only as a PGA Championship Course, but also because of the area’s connection to the Battle of Salado and the King’s Highway to Goliad.  On the northern edge, it is adjacent to Southside Lions Park East and adds to the environmental quality of not only our immediate neighborhoods but also the City of San Antonio.

Quick Facts:

·         Pecan Valley was the site of 1968 PGA Championship, one of golf's annual four Major Championships.

·         Site of the 2001 United States Golf Association Public Links National Championship.

·         In 2011 Golf Digest ranked Pecan Valley as one of the top 30 best courses in the state of Texas.

·         For 50 years a beacon of hope and pride for the southeast side of town Pecan Valley is a showcase for San Antonio to any golfer traveling to our city for business, conventions or vacations.

We, as a community, know the results of flooding of Salado Creek which includes the golf course.  The course sits on a major flood plain, and the Pecan Valley Neighborhood has witnessed serious effects of the floods of 1998 and 2002.  The course was covered by flooding waters with the water rising up to the Salado Creek Bridge on E. Southcross and continuing downstream towards S.E. Military Drive.

The rezoning of the Pecan Valley Golf Course to “G Only” is an issue of the preservation of urban green space, of stewardship for the heritage trees that are found on the course, as well as the historical and archaeological significance of the golf course property.

In addition to all of the above, we have the Salado Creek/ Salado Watershed and the sensitive environmental issues that come with the watershed and the flow of the Salado Creek.
